How Edible Lens collects, uses and protects users' data.

Last updated: 30 June 2026

This policy describes how the application Edible Lens ("the app") collects, uses and protects users' data. Edible Lens is an educational app for identifying wild plants and mushrooms through photography.

Data controller

Edible Lens is operated by an individual developer. For any request regarding the processing of your personal data you can write to: support@ediblelens.app.

1. Data we process

Images. When you identify a plant or mushroom, the photos you take or select are sent to our servers for analysis. Images are processed solely for identification purposes and are not retained as a permanent personal archive on our servers.

Location data (GPS). If you grant permission, location is used to improve the reliability of identification and, for wild species, to contribute to the community map. Your exact GPS coordinates are never made public: before publication the location is converted into an approximate area of about 100×100 metres. GPS is not used for potted plants or those identified in a private context.

Account data. If you log in, we process your email address and display name through the authentication service. Login is optional and not required to identify plants.

Technical data. For the operation and security of the service we process minimal technical data, including device information (operating system, system version, app version) and an anonymous device identifier. Your IP address is used exclusively in hashed form to prevent abuse of the service and is not stored in clear text.

Subscription data. The status of your Premium subscription and related usage data (for example the number of scans performed) are managed through our subscription provider.

Advertising data. If you consent, advertising identifiers are used to show you more relevant ads (see section 5).

2. Purposes of processing

We use the data to:

  • identify plants and mushrooms from images;
  • show botanical fact sheets and educational information;
  • let you save your discoveries in your personal herbarium;
  • manage the community map of finds in anonymous form;
  • manage accounts and subscriptions;
  • ensure the security of the service and prevent abuse;
  • show ads (for free plan users).

3. Legal basis (GDPR)

We process your data on the basis of consent (which you give when launching the app and which you can withdraw), the performance of the service you request (identification, account, subscription) and the legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and functional.

4. Third-party services

To provide the service we rely on third-party providers that may process some data on our behalf:

  • Google (Firebase, Google AI, AdMob, Maps, Sign in with Google) — authentication, infrastructure, image analysis, advertising and maps. The servers that process identification requests are located in Europe. Google policy.
  • RevenueCat — subscription management. RevenueCat policy.
  • Apple (Sign in with Apple) — authentication on iOS. Apple policy.
  • Wikimedia Commons / Wikipedia and iNaturalist — sources of the species reference images. Wikimedia policy · iNaturalist policy.

5. Advertising and tracking

The free plan of Edible Lens shows ads through Google AdMob.

On iOS, before any tracking you are asked for consent through Apple's App Tracking Transparency system. If you do not grant permission, ads are shown to you in non-personalised form.

On Android, you are presented with a consent form compliant with European regulations. Depending on your choice, ads may be personalised or non-personalised.

Premium users do not see any ads.

6. Data retention

We keep data only for as long as strictly necessary for the purposes described:

  • account data as long as the account remains active, and in any case until you request its deletion;
  • images only for the time needed for identification;
  • community map data in anonymous and aggregated form.

7. Your rights

In accordance with the GDPR, you have the right to: access your data, request its rectification or deletion, restrict or object to its processing, and request its portability. You may also withdraw your consent at any time.

You can delete your account and associated data directly from the app, in the Profile section. To exercise the other rights, write to support@ediblelens.app. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority.

8. Minimum age

Edible Lens is intended for users who are at least 16 years old. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16.

9. Security

We adopt appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect data from unauthorised access, loss or disclosure. Communications with our servers take place over encrypted connections.

10. International transfers

Some of our providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. In such cases, the transfer takes place in compliance with the safeguards provided by the GDPR (for example standard contractual clauses).

11. Changes

This policy may be updated over time. Changes will be published on this page with the relevant update date.
